Time has been moving in [fast-forward] lately and it seems like everyone’s asking, “Dang Jovel & Ky, where the h*ll you been?” (had to throw in that Watch the Throne reference!). Well, for the past month, we’ve been going nonstop, from trying to enjoy our last Homecoming at Morehouse and dealing with school to staying on top of our personal projects. I feel like it’s only right for me to show you my absence letter.
The entire first half of our semester was primarily dedicated to our Homecoming Fashion Show, for which Kyrell and I served as the creative directors. Kyrell handled everything merchandise- and styling-related and I headed thematic development, choreo, and model training. This year’s show was titled Culmination and told the Mayan story of creation, or at least, my team’s version of it. Our five-scene production was combined with the Homecoming hip-hop concert this year, so we had the challenging task of making sure that it didn’t turn into a Rip the Runway sort of show. Kendrick Lamar, Future, and Ace Hood took the stage to perform in between our scenes, but we all know what the audience was really there for. The show was extremely successful. We had a great turnout, got awesome feedback, and Kyrell and I definitely left our mark. Keep reading for a behind-the-scenes look at our dress rehearsal and from backstage on the big night and check out some shots from the actual production.
I got to work with an awesome team of individuals, each of whom represented a different, but vital part of our creative process. Most of the team was new to the game, but I was really impressed by how well they fit into their roles and took charge. I definitely feel comfortable passing on the torch for next year’s show. It’s crazy how close you can get to a small group of people over four weeks, but we really bonded on a different level.
