So, by now, we’re all well aware that the temperature in NY is O.D. at this point. And as I desperately fight the urge to ditch all my layers and leave the house in nothing but underwear, I thought it’d be a good idea to whip up a quick style guide to help you guys survive the dog days of summer in style.
Before I got started, I linked up with my buddies at I.W. Harper Bourbon and headed over to 5th Avenue to grab some new threads to beat this heat. Let’s get to it.
For the Office
Guys, I DREAD waking up and trying to figure out a work-appropriate look that won’t suffocate me on my commute to the office. Stuffy collared shirts and structured blazers aren’t the move when you’re hitting the subway stations (or should I say, saunas) in the summer. The solution? Go for a lightweight blazer—linen, seersucker, chambray, whatever works for you—and match it with a solid tee that’s comfortable yet still fitted. Now, I work for a fashion company, so this longline tee from Y-3 works for me, but if you’re in a more conservative setting, swap a T-shirt out for an unbuttoned polo. The jacket will keep you looking like a boss when it counts, and as soon as you hit that door, slip it off and let those arms breathe.

In the City
In your off-time, have a little fun with things. Break out some fresh printed tees, like this floral bad boy from Paul Smith, and make a statement as you hit the streets. Keep color choice in mind, as certain shades reveal perspiration way more than others. And remember the cuffed sleeve—it’s a simple detail that’s perfect for the season. To round out the look, I broke out these 3.1 Phillip Lim Bermuda shorts. Thinking about the right bottoms for your body type is always important, and if you need to put in a little more legwork in the gym (*shamefully raises hand*), a longer pair that doesn’t flare out too much will keep you looking (and feeling) cool all season long.

Your Next Getaway
When it comes to summer vacation style, there’s no way you’ll catch me in heavy layers. My formula: a breezy button down (with at least three buttons undone) + shorts that run above the knee + a comfortable pair of shoes (preferably ones that slide off easily). As you guys may have seen from my Hamptons trip last weekend, I paired an olive green Perry Ellis shirt with these new Paul Smith trunks, which I wore both as shorts and swimwear. Together, they added a nice pop of color that’s totally in season.

Hopefully these looks will help steer you in the right direction as you flesh out your warm-weather wardrobe. If you have questions, DM on Instagram at @jovelroystan.
FYI: I’m being compensated for my participation in I.W. Harper Bourbon’s summer-long campaign, which includes this blog post, but as always, all the thoughts, opinions, experiences and imagery are my own. Make sure you guys [drink responsibly] and remember that whiskey’s intended for the 21+ crowd (wait your turn, like the rest of us, haha)!
